Go back Our General Onyx, Black Portion ReviewLaunched in 2006 by Swedish Match AB, General Onyx portion snus is classified as a white type portion even though the material used in Onyx is black! As you all remember, white type portions do not go thru the final step in the manufacturing process that adds a bit more moisture to the portion. While this leaves the material a bit dry, Swedish Match uses a soft, black colored teabag type material that stays comfortable in the lip for as loge as the flavor lasts which is about 2 hours. Each can of General Onyx contains 24, one gram portions with each having 11 mg of Nicotine and arranged in the trademark “Star” pattern that Swedish Match reserves for only it’s top of the line snus brands! General Onyx’s can is made of black plastic with a flat black label that has gloss black embellishments. The Used portion compartment cap on the top of the lid is also embossed with the General logo on silver foil. The can is pretty unique but the snus inside is even more unique so, let’s take a look! General Onyx is described, by most people that have tried it, as Swedish Match’s crown jewel of the General snus line and we tend to agree. General Onyx’s flavor is of hand selected tobaccos from around the world, salt, black pepper and lemon. “Don’t you mean Bergamot?” No, General Onyx is one of the few Swedish snus brands that actually use lemon flavor instead of bergamot and the taste of lemons really matches well with the tobacco flavor. The taste is actually close to a grilled lemon with a bit of salt and black pepper sprinkled over it. The tobacco adds a bit of earthiness and a hint of sweetness which levels the flavor out! But, this is what we think of General Onyx’s flavor. We want to hear what you taste. So, give General Onyx portion snus a try and add a can or two to your next order. Just a great snus! Fantastic taste and smell, comfortable pouches, really cool looking can, and strong too!!! If you like Whites because you don't like runny snus, give this stuff a try.

I would agree with the previous comments on the color change. I'm sure they just used the same material without the dye, however the processing of the pouch material would obviously change. Maybe the dye process added a few extra rinsing/washing steps that made it just a little bit softer.
I got into snus and tried the Onyx just before the switch and I would have to say that I prefer the black pouch. This is still an excellent tasting snus though. I love the peppery and spicy taste!

I find the new white portion to be a dissapointment, bordering on a personal tragedy... And I disagree about the texture. The texture is much dryer and in my opinion it affects the taste - leaving it bland compared to the black pouch, which had an oilier surface, and gave an instant effect with every pouch.. And how can Swedish Match defend calling it Onyx, now that it´s a white portion? Give me back the black!

Easily the best portion snus available today.
Not a huge fan of the new white pouches though. Even though there is no difference in texture or taste, I preferred the black.

This is a unique snus indeed, no other snus i tried tasted like this one, it has a strong taste, reminds me of lemon for some reason, first time i tried it i didn't like it, then i fall in love with it, then it became to much for me, i'll say it's not an everyday snus but it's a fun snus to try out.

The lemon flavor is a great change of pace from the bergamot. Much mellower flavor from the other General snus, and the salt content seems to be much lower as well. My favorite General brand by far.

Love this snus. I'm a newbie but this stuff is really nice. Very spicy at first but not too strong. The flavor lasts a long time and I have found myself leaving a portion in for up to 2 hours. the plastic can is the same as any other snus but I really like the star shape.
The portions are a really good size for me and I do like the wedge shape. The material is similar to some of the other General portions and very soft on the gums. Extremely comfortable to use and not the least bit irritating. I tried one can and bought a roll of 10 to keep in the freezer.

Fantastic! From the presentation down to the flavor, this product is a grand slam. Jakobsson's mint and classic were my go-to choices previously (and thus far the Jakobsson's mint is still my favorite mint snus) but the General Onyx has become my #1 plain tobacco snus. The lemony, peppery flavor is rich, intense, and very pleasant after a meal or with cocktails. The flavor lasts longer than the Jakobsson's classic, and doesn't become bitter or thin. Highly recommended!

Try fluffing that hard wedge til it feels like a reg pouch feels. I had the same problem when trying a wedge for the first time....

I liked this snus well enough. The General lemon-pepper flavor is very strong - more pepper than lemon, almost like taking a pouch of pepper and putting it in your mouth. I like black pepper though, so it works out.
The overall presentation is beautiful - the arranged pouches and the can itself look very sophisticated. My only complaint is the pouch material. It may just be me but the fabric irritated the crap out of my gums and was just plain painful. It wasn't bad enough that I didn't want to use it but it was bad enough for me that I don't want to order it again. It was really roughly made and felt like I was sticking wool in my upper lip.

This snus is great. The tabacco flavor is strong with a good nic hit! Just what I need. If your looking for a snus with good ol' tabacoo flavor this is for you. If your american, don't bother with the crap they have on market EXP - camel snus, marb, skol, this is what you need. Great porduct great hit 5/5

Wow! What a great snus. Very smooth with a great nicotine hit. I have been a premium full body cigar smoker for over 20 years. 3-4 stogies a day. I have not smoked a stogie in a month. The difference in my wallet is amazing. This will definetly be a keeper snus.

Wow!!! The Genral Onyx is fantastic and really smooth. I have been smoking full bodied cigars for over 20 years. At least 2-4 a day. I have not smoked a cigar in 2 weeks since trying the oynx. The nicotine hit is fantastic. Trying snus has been a blessing on my wallet:!:

All I can say about this is that it's absolutely amazing! To date, this is the best snus I've tried. It is so well balanced and the blend has a wonderful taste to it. The nicotine content is perfect! I really think this will become my standard everyday snus once I finish everything I have. Phenomenal!

These are nice snus, and I prefer them over most other General-branded snus. If you like the black portions, I'd suggest also giving GrovSnus a try. There is certainly nothing wrong with the Onyx, and I'd give them 4 stars. I'd give the GrovSnus 5, though...

I've been doing snus for about a year. I've tried over two dozen types. This is the gold standard. It does have a kick, though.
