Our Catch Licorice, Mini Portion Review

Launched in 1984 and made by Swedish Match AB, Catch Licorice Mini portion snus is classified as a regular mini type portion. Regular mini type portions are basically smaller versions of the full sized regular type portions and are about half the size. They also go thru the added step at the end of the manufacturing process that adds a bit more moisture to them which helps the flavors meld together and release it faster in the lip. Swedish Match uses the same soft material they use in most of their portion snus and is pretty comfortable in the lip for as long as the flavor lasts which is about an hour. Each can of Catch Licorice Mini contains 20 portions that have about .5 grams of snus each and a Nicotine content of 4 mg per portion. Catch Licorice Mini’s can is made of grey plastic with a paper/foil label that gives the can a modern, classy look and yes, there is a used portion compartment in the lid under the Catch Licorice Mini logo but, enough about the can, on to the flavor! Swedish Match describes Catch Licorice Mini’s flavor as having a mild tobacco character with aniseed and licorice flavor but what we taste is salt and licorice with a hint of tobacco. While Licorice is very popular in Sweden, as is salt, the two flavors go really well together and actually give the subtle tobacco flavor an earthy, herbal taste. For those of you that don’t know what flavor aniseed has, its flavor is mild licorice but not the sharp flavor like a Black Licorice candy. It’s actually what gives Catch Licorice Mini its licorice flavor. We feel that Catch Licorice Mini makes a great snus for those who want to experience a flavored snus that’s one of the most popular flavors in Sweden but a bit milder and more discreet than the others. Pretty good snus. A little light on the nicotine for me, but as far as flavor this is probably the second best licorice snus on the market, best available in US. We used to be able to get LD Salmiak and it was the best, but has not been available in US since the PACT Act.

The aroma when you open the can is full on black licorice smells great. Rather than the overly sweet US snus/dip, this does not taste like the sweet black licorice sticks; the flavor is not sweet but more subtle and natural. I think the quality of tobacco may not be as great in Catch products as in others (LD or General) but the licorice helps to smooth it out. Great for a person transitioning from the overly sweetened and flavored US Dips.
